Windows Pc Defender is a fake security product.  This program is similar in name to the real Windows Defender program.  The makers of rouge security clients often name programs very similar to real ones in an effort to trick users into thinking it’s the real thing through name or brand recognition.  This program is the same as Smart Virus Eliminator.  The trace files and the  name of the program have changed but it’s the same overall look.  These people have also made several other programs as well.  We traced back the IP of the domain and that is how we were able to 100% verify that this program is from the same makers.

In most cases people infected with Windows PC Defender will notice several warning messages.  These messages are all false.  They are only there to scare the user into making a purchase of the program.  A scan will also start up on people.  The objects detected in the scan are also false.  It’s just another trick they use to get people to think it’s a real product.

Most people will be able to tell of the bat that something is not right with this software.  Also many people will get re-directs and other advertisements poping up on them as well as their system slowing down overall.

It is very important to note that most people infected with Windows PC defender will also have other viruses installed.  We do recommend you run a scan using what ever security program you trust the most.

Step 1. You need to end the Windows PC Defender program. Open the Task Manager ( ctrl+alt+del ) and end the process wpc6c3.exe, if this process is not there then your strain has mutated from the one this guide is for. It should be similar in name. You can run a quick scan using Spyware Doctor with Antivirus to identify the new process as well. If you can not open the task manager then try to run the Kill process tool on the side bar of this site.

Step 2. Delete all the Windows PC Defender files . The location of this program in our test was

  • setup_build8_201.exe ( Your install file will most likely be different but very similar in name
  • wpc6c3.exe
  • %appdata%\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launch\windows pc defender.lnk
  • %common_desktopdirectory%\windows pc defender.lnk
  • %common_programs%\windows pc defender.lnk
  • %startmenu%\windows pc defender.lnk

The above are the files we found for this trace.

Step 3. Delete the rest of the trace folders from your computer. Here is a list we found on the Spyware Doctor with Antivirus scan. Keep in mind your traces may be different and that is why you will need to run a scan.

  • %appdata%\windows pc defender
  • %common_appdata%\wpcdsys
  • %program_files%\windows pc defender

Step 3. We are going to be editing the registry and removing the Personal Antivirus strains. Go to the run bar and type regedit. Now find and delete the following registry keys.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run windows pc defender\
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run windows pc defender
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\windows pc defender
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall\windows pc defender
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\windows pc defender
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run windows pc defender

That should be it for this strain. If you are having issues and can not get programs to run like the Task Manager then try the Kill Process tool in the side bar. You still need to run a Security scan to ensure you have no other threats on your computer. We use Spyware Doctor with Antivirus because it works really well.

We should also note that this site recommends www.onlinecomputerrepair.org for a removal service. Many sites out there do recommend them because they are one of the best and cheapest places to get your computer repaired online. Even if you don’t use them for this it’s worth bookmarking because some day you will need them.
