Removal Guide

This is a Generic Smitfraud removal guide. Smitfraud refers to any fake security product. You are far better off doing a search on this site first using the name of the fake security product. However if there is not a specific guide written or the specific guide did not address your issue then this is a great guide to follow. It will involve several more steps because it’s a general how to guide on removing all viruses and spyware. It may take you a while but it’s free and works well. We do highly recommend the purchase of Spyware Doctor with Antivirus because it’s one of the best security clients out there for removing things like Smitfraud. You don’t have to purchase it but it makes the whole process much faster.

Here is a step by step guide to remove Smitfraud. It is important to know that if you are infected with Smitfraud you also have several other viruses as well. The most common that come with Smitfraud are Virtumonde, Vundo, Zlob and a fake antivirus client. It is important to not only fully remove Smitfraud but all other viruses and spyware and also secure your PC so you do not get infected again. Once again the simplest way to do this is fork over the 40 bucks and just purchase Spyware Doctor with Antivirus.

There are free ways to remove this threat but it takes a while. If you are up for a challenge and have the time then this guide is for you. If not then consider this Computer Repair site. It’s the best online computer repair company out there and their price can not be beat.

The first thing we are going to do is a system restore. This will not fully remove the virus but it will help to remove most of the registry settings. Only installed programs from after the date chosen will be uninstalled. Go to Start > All Programs > Accsessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then select a date from when you were not infected If you have no restore pionts or it does not restore your computer to an earlier time then just move on to the next section. Many Smitfraud clients out there now a days disable system restore so this option is working less and less each day

Now we are going to download several tools. All have at least a free trial and are needed. Just click the link to download the item and save it to your desktop. You may need to enable pop-ups for this. DO NOT INSTALL YET

Smitfraudfix : Free tool from Siri that was made just for Smitfraud and does a great job to help remove Smitraud.

Spyware Doctor with Antivirus : Free 30 day trial that will block all spyware so it does not get re-installed.

Install Spyware Doctor with Antivirus first. You may need to remove any junk antivurs you are using if prompted. Once installed run the update. It will start an auto scan as well. Stop the scan unless you plan on purchasing this software. The main purpose of this is to stop all threats from being re-installed. If you purchase this software and you should consider it then run the full scan. Other wise move on.

Now install Spybot and be sure when installing to uncheck the TEA TIMER option. This will only interfere with removal of all threats. Update this product

Now install Malwarebytes. Update the product but do not run a scan.

Now that every client is updated we are going to boot into safe mode. To boot into safe mode just re-boot the computer and press the F8 key every other second on boot. Then select the Safe Mode option. Once you have logged into your account or the Administrator account run the Smitfraudfix.exe tool first. select option 2 when promoted. This is the cleaning option. When prompted to remove junk temp files you can hit Y for yes or N for no. Personally I do not remove them at this point and hit option N. This is because it is just using the Windows cleanup tool and I don’t care for it. When prompted to clean the registry press Y for yes.

We will now run a scan using Spbot Seatch and Destroy. Just open the program and run a scan. After the scan just hit the fix button. You will most likely be asked to run the scan again on re-boot. Select the YES option if asked. Once the scan is done re-boot. Spybot will run on auto start. Follow the same process again. Once you log back into Windows you will notice several DOS like screens pop-up. This normal and Spybot doing it’s thing.

Now run Malwarebytes. Do a quick scan the first time around. It’s better to catch things right away then taking an hour for a full scan. Once the scan is done remove whatever it found. Now run a full scan and sit back. It will most likely take 30 – 60 minutes. Once done select the remove button again.

Now run a full scan using Spyware Doctor with Antivirus. It does not remove any threats during the free trial but it’s a great tool to run to ensure you are clean. If it only finds cookies infected or browser links for searches and the like consider yourself clean. If it finds many more items then you will need to download more free tools and run more scans to ensure you remove everything. Spyware Doctor with Antivirus is one of the better clients out there so if it does not find anything then consider yourself good to go. You will still need to get a client to secure your computer so you do not get infected again. The choice on what to use is all up to you. I do not recommend free clients for protection. None of them are good enough. Malwarebytes does have a paid version of the software that I really like as well so that is another client to consider. The free version I feel it not good enough for up front protection.

You will most likely still need to change you home page back to normal. Do this under the tools option in your browser.

If you still see pop-ups then all is not lost. You can use Highjack this and or Combo fix. Both of these tools are for advanced users only as they can do lots of damage. We will not list links to them for that reason but you can google them and download them.

If you are still infected the Consider forking over a few bucks for Spyware Doctor with Antivirus or having a pro remove Smitfraud for you over at http://www.onlinecomputerrepair.org

It’s rather rare that this process will not work for you. There are cases were the Smitfraud client stops items from running. In these cases you will need to of identify what the virus or Smitfraud client is in order to know what to do.

When the Task Manager is disabled and you need to terminate a process we use Kill Process. Download links are over to the right.

Another product we have been using is Mal-Aware. Link is on the right as well. It’s rather a good tool. Still very new but it’s being well supported and should work well for you.

Worst case again is having to pay the 89 bucks to have www.onlinecomputerrepair.org remove it. We love the guys and have links all over the place for them because they do such a good job.
